BLANK_
BLANK_ is a gallery run by University Centre Leeds at Quarry Hill campus, in the heart of Leeds’ cultural quarter. It is an empty space that is brought to life by the personality and emotion of the artist's work and provides a platform to artists who don’t have one.

BLANK_ needed a brand identity and subsequent marketing materials that were subtle, un-intrusvive and simple. Any brand created needed to frame the artists work but never overshadow it.

The publication is the main creative piece of BLANK_. It provides a platform for artists to respond to a current brief based on the live exhibit at that time, extending the theme of the exhibition. This was supported by a hero video, print material and signage.

A frame for artwork to shine

The most important feature of BLANK_ is the artwork and the artists who produce it. Large amounts of white space, a quiet colour palette and simple layouts allows BLANK_ to showcase artwork without interfering with it. The logo, stamped in the bottom left of every piece of material, acts as a mark of approval.

Publishing as a work of art

The BLANK_ publication uses experimental typography to intrigue the reader and mimics the art it is describing, without telling the full story. BLANK_ allows the artist to narrate their own work in their own words, using typography to provide hints at the meaning behind the artwork.

The BLANK_ publication was distributed to guests at the launch and was a key factor in developing into an established arts space in Leeds. The publication has continued biannually and editions have included work from artists across Europe and the world.
